I think the most important lesson I learned from College-Ready Writing Essentials is the importance of speaking with other peers about your individual essays and topics. When my homeschool group did the peer review assignment together it was very helpful to see other writing styles and also the topics that they chose to write about.

Also, I was able to get a lot of input on my own writing, so I was able to adjust what works and what does not. 

Another lesson I learned was the importance of outlining an essay before writing it. This helps sort out my ideas and reduces my stress when jumping in to writing the essay.

In my English classes in high school, I was not challenged enough to think on a deeper level and write true academic pieces of literature. I didn’t have to put in much effort at all to receive an A. Analyzing rhetoric, quite frankly, is something that I am rather glad I received the opportunity to learn via College-Ready Writing Essentials. It was not something I went over in high school, and I think that my ability to analyze arguments suffered because of that fact. Prior to taking this course I did not have the best writing skills. I was very incompetent when it came to grammar or rhetorical devices. The number one thing that College-Ready Writing Essentials has taught me is there are multiple writing styles. I think that College-Ready Writing Essentials was honestly extremely helpful as I was developing thoughts and ideas for an essay. Before taking College-Ready Writing Essentials, I had minimal knowledge about what is needed in a piece to make it persuasive.

I’ve learned a lot about my writing abilities and about how to properly construct an essay that persuades readers by using all rhetorical appeals. I learned about the importance of ethos, logos, and pathos and that a writer should build these in their writing in order to make their piece strong and convincing.

I learned that in order to be persuaded, readers need to trust the writer.

In my future profession I will be working with teams of people in which I will need to brief teams. I will need to be able to write a persuasive piece in order to be hired for a career. Now I feel completely confident that I can.

Prior to taking this course I did not have the best writing skills. I was very incompetent when it came to grammar or rhetorical devices. The number one thing that College-Ready Writing Essentials has taught me is there are multiple writing styles. This allowed me to realize if I laid out the issue, gave background, and stated my perspective with evidence, then I could also persuade my audience. I do not have to copy someone else’s style or paper because my writing is good enough.

The second most important thing College-Ready Writing Essentials taught me is that writing takes time; there are so many steps that go into creating a successful paper. Prior to taking this course, my research assignments would take me maximum a week. After taking this course, I realize that all those papers were still in the development stages. In my eyes, the final essay I wrote for College-Ready Writing Essentials has been the only paper that has evolved into being a completed piece. The college readiness writing helped me understand how to develop my essays for the future. No essay is complete after the first draft; sometimes it even takes two or three revisions.

I thought since I had been a good student in high school that college would be easy enough. I didn’t realize how overwhelming it would feel, right away. I had a hard time managing all the new experiences, assignments, and my social life at once. It was very difficult focusing or knowing where to start. I failed two courses my first year. I found Dr. Bryant’s College Success Accelerator over the summer…and I’ve been much more successful this year.

When my homeschool group did the peer review assignment together it was very helpful to see other writing styles and also the topics that they chose to write about.
