    Experience, Expertise, Passion

College-Ready Writing Essentials was developed by Dr. William Bryant specifically to tackle the CRITICAL transition space between high school and college.

Dr. Bryant has been a writer, editor, and educator for over 30 years and was previously Director of Writing Assessments at ACT Inc. He has worked extensively with student writing, gaining a deep understanding of the “college-ready writing gap,” its causes…and the best strategies to address this concerning issue in education.

    What Families Like Yours

    Are Saying…

I think the most important lesson I learned from College-Ready Writing Essentials is the importance of speaking with other peers about your individual essays and topics. When my homeschool group did the peer review assignment together it was very helpful to see other writing styles and also the topics that they chose to write about.

Also, I was able to get a lot of input on my own writing, so I was able to adjust what works and what does not.

Another lesson I learned was the importance of outlining an essay before writing it. This helps sort out my ideas and reduces my stress when jumping in to writing the essay.

College-Ready Writing Essentials has been priceless in building, for me, the writing skills that I will need for my career. I learned that good communication entails more than just delivering information; it’s a process of anticipating what an audience might want or need—and then serving those needs with ideas that mean something to them.

I will apply these strategies to make my communication clear, concise, and purposeful. These skills will be important in making my ideas understood and supported by colleagues, stakeholders, and other professionals in my industry.

    Jay S.
    Student

Before taking College-Ready Writing Essentials, I had minimal knowledge about what is needed in a piece to make it persuasive.

I’ve learned a lot about my writing abilities and about how to properly construct an essay that persuades readers by using all rhetorical appeals. I learned about the importance of ethos, logos, and pathos and that a writer should build these in their writing in order to make their piece strong and convincing.

I learned that in order to be persuaded, readers need to trust the writer.

In my future profession I will be working with teams of people in which I will need to brief teams. I will need to be able to write a persuasive piece in order to be hired for a career. Now I feel completely confident that I can.

Comparing my work in College-Ready Writing Essentials to what I produced in high school, the difference is significant. I’ve noticed real growth in my writing. While I still faced challenges, the progress I made was clear. My writing is now leaps and bounds better than what I’ve done before, and I’m proud of the strides I’ve made. Thank you, Dr. Bryant!

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you, Dr. Bryant, for your unwavering support and guidance throughout College-Ready Writing Essentials. Your dedication to teaching and commitment to student success has made a significant impact on my educational journey. I will be carrying the knowledge and tools learned from you as I continue forward.

In my English classes in high school, I was not challenged enough to think on a deeper level and write true academic pieces of literature. I didn’t have to put in much effort at all to receive an A. I knew coming to college was going to be a slap in the face as far as me needing to become a stronger writer, especially because I felt that I wasn’t properly prepared for it. After completing Dr. Bryant’s College-Ready Writing Essentials course I can now release a sigh of relief because I know I can write a solid essay.

    Jordan M.
    Student

I always hated English classes and never paid much attention because of my own irresponsibility. Now that I’m not the same kid I used to be I dedicated time to listening and reading and analyzing what Dr. Bryant had to say even if I still don’t love English class. I learned something from every lesson in College-Ready Writing Essentials. It has helped me a LOT with understanding people and how they say things and why. Like why is this person saying this, is this meaningful, is it manipulative, or is it sincere?

    Brandon B.
    Student

I think that College-Ready Writing Essentials was honestly extremely helpful as I was developing thoughts and ideas for an essay. It helped me lay out my thoughts in a visual way and forced me to explain things in detail to help me. It did go quite in-depth on what it wanted you to achieve and the examples were very helpful to compare my own works with.

    Avery S.
    Student

Some of the most important things I learned from College-Ready Writing Essentials is that crafting clear, well-structured arguments backed by credible evidence is something I now know is essential for effective communication.

I also discovered that persuasion is all about understanding rhetorical techniques, ethos, pathos, and logos, and using them to connect with the audience by aligning my message with their values. This skill is crucial for engaging people and making my arguments more convincing, whether in writing or conversation.

I envision myself using these persuasion tactics for the rest of my life for everything—for example, a resume for a job, or an email to my job about a different idea, or even just day-to-day conversation.

    Rylee M.

I’m typically a fairly reserved person, but the material [in College-Ready Writing Essentials] was just begging for me to express my opinions or views on it. This was the best I have ever done in any English related course. Also, the most I have wanted to interact with the subject.

    Aiden M.

One of the most valuable aspects of College-Ready Writing Essentials was the focus on the writing process. I appreciated the emphasis on prewriting and brainstorming, as well as the importance of revision and editing. By going through the various stages of writing, I was able to produce more thoughtful and well-organized essays…and I felt more confident in my writing abilities overall. I also appreciated the feedback I received on my writing from Dr. Bryant and my peers, which helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses and improve my work.

    Lisa P.

College-Ready Writing Essentials has improved my own writing skills and taken my understanding of persuasion to another level. I am confident that these newfound skills will be incredibly useful and allow myself to further my career.

Whether presenting design reviews for a team, creating research papers throughout my university experience, or producing a paper for the public, I’ll be able to properly communicate my ideas and advocate for their use to others. Effectively communicating will establish myself as a credible and reliable professional.

Last semester I failed COM 122 due to being new to university. I did not seek help earlier as I should have. In working with Dr. Bryant and College Success Accelerator, though, I came to see the ways in which I needed to manage my workload better, plus understand specific things about college culture and key skills. Now I feel much better positioned to actually finish my degree.

I would like to thank Dr. Bryant for motivating me to write. I believe that his guidance as was critical to my motivation in writing and publishing solid academic work. Out of all the English classes I have ever taken, College-Ready Writing Essentials is the one where I believe I made my best work.

The most important lessons I learned from College-Ready Writing Essentials were how to put together an academically persuasive essay, how to properly research a topic, and how to use the material I gathered to structure an essay. I also learned that using good ethos, logos and pathos will help me to connect and persuade my audience. These elements can lend to my trustworthiness as the audience reads my essays. I will use these lessons in the future… for research findings, cover letters, and essays or presentations. These lessons will help me communicate to my audience so that they will understand me and take me seriously.

College-Ready Writing Essentials (Home Edition)—I cannot stress enough how helpful Dr. Bryant’s personal feedback was for A. If you are like me, it can be hard to help guide and teach your child/student through the complete process of writing and give feedback. Having Dr. Bryant’s feedback really completed the program for me as it gave A. ideas and suggestions for improving her personal writing. This was so valuable!

College-Ready Writing Essentials was a useful tool which helped me create my essay because it helped me stage the essay and approach it with a new tactic as previously, I would simply start drafting my writing. I had never used a program like College-Ready Writing Essentials before, and with its assistance, I was able to correctly organize and construct an essay that was effective in its aim, to generate a significant persuasive essay in a college-level class.

Throughout College-Ready Writing Essentials I learned several important lessons about writing, including the importance of clarity, conciseness, and organization. I also learned the importance of understanding my audience and tailoring my writing to their needs and expectations. I discovered that persuasion is a crucial skill in many professional contexts and that it requires careful consideration of the audience, the message, and the context. Overall, I believe that this course has prepared me well for the challenges of professional writing. I have learned important skills and techniques that I can apply in various contexts, and I feel confident in my ability to communicate effectively with others.

    Preston W.

College-Ready Writing Essentials was surprisingly helpful, especially the last few lessons as it let me split my essay into parts that I could piece together instead of writing everything all at once which I always find very intimidating and often feel like the writing will never end.

I believe that this course has taught me a lot when it comes to being a better writer and I believe that I am now able to successfully use this knowledge.

    Ian C.
    Student

I feel that I learned a lot about writing skills while writing my essay. College-Ready Writing Essentials allowed me to pick a topic that was entirely up to me which I enjoyed a lot. It allowed me to write about something that I not only know a lot about, but something I am passionate about… I think this is the best thing to go for when writing a persuasive argument because you are trying to persuade someone of something that you actually believe, not just something you have to force yourself to believe. It makes it more realistic to implement tools such as Ethos, Logos, and Pathos and allowed me to learn how to use them properly. Overall, College-Ready Writing Essentials helped me to understand how to argue and structure my essay a lot better, and also helped me to understand the process of writing an essay from planning, research, and drafting to finalizing.

College-Ready Writing Essentials was an excellent resource as the lessons were extremely detailed and provided many examples to work off. I appreciated Dr. Bryant’s step-by-step support during every part of the process, and feel a LOT more confident in my writing capabilities as a result now!

College-Ready Writing Essentials is an excellent intensive course that would be very suitable for a high school senior, or motivated high school junior, or for a summer preparation course for a high school graduate. It is not light or casual, but takes a serious approach to building the necessary skills for students who want to be well prepared for college academics.

I felt the resources provided in Dr. Bryant’s College Success Accelerator program were high-quality and educated me about college prep very effectively. I liked the lessons in that they weren’t too long and the assignments gave us a solid look at how we were supposed to be doing everything step-by-step. The writing portion really broke down the process—I’ve never experienced such in-depth, understandable instruction on how to write an academic essay.

My personal opinion about Dr.  Bryant’s College-Ready Writing Essentials is that it was very helpful. The most beneficial part I thought were lessons 8-12 where Dr. Bryant taught me how to identify legitimate sources and use evidence from those sources.

College-Ready Writing Essentials was helpful also for organizing my thoughts by not allowing me to write the paper in one day. The course made me plan ahead a lot more than usual and then split up the work which was very helpful for the process.

I thought since I had been a good student in high school that college would be easy enough. I didn’t realize how overwhelming it would feel, right away. I had a hard time managing all the new experiences, assignments, and my social life at once. It was very difficult focusing or knowing where to start. I failed two courses my first year. I found Dr. Bryant’s College Success Accelerator over the summer…and I’ve been much more successful this year.

Being exposed ahead of time to the concepts about college academic culture, writing skills, and time management that Dr. Bryant discusses in College Success Accelerator helped me enormously! I’m so excited to see a change in my writing ability! I’ve felt frustrated with this forever, but I think I’ve finally begun to understand how to write at a higher level now! Coming out of high school I was always caught on the idea that there is a formula to follow in order to create a good essay and that if you stray from that formula in any way it just hurts your writing…I now realize that this is not true and it really made the essay easier to plan and carry out. I liked the way that College-Ready Writing Essentials walks you through each step of the entire process and provided examples. It really is very straightforward and almost foolproof.”

My whole life I’ve never been a fan of writing, but I’m proud of the work I created as well as how much I learned.

College-Ready Writing Essentials assignments are a great way to promote working on an essay step-by-step instead of all at once. It was definitely important to create an outline of my essay before actually writing it.

I can see that I am going to have to continue to write essays throughout school and I am now able to take what I’ve learned in College-Ready Writing Essentials to go into those projects and essays with confidence.

Wow, I’m so glad I knew all this going in! Dr. Bryant’s explanations about how college actually works and how my professors want me to think and manage my workload in his College Success Accelerator course changed my whole understanding of what I was entering into. College-Ready Writing Essentials focuses on substance and understanding, not just a final writing product. This is the kind of college preparation students need most. In college, students learn to develop a broader perspective and see the bigger picture. I think College-Ready Writing Essentials is a great stepping stone to that.

I would just like to say that College-Ready Writing Essentials has been one of the best English courses I have ever been enrolled in. It was much more fun and informative than anything high school provided.

    Tejas D.

College-Ready Writing Essentials has taught me that persuasion is not just what you write, but how you write it. You must adapt your writing technique to your audience to optimize your reach and rhetoric—by implementing different tones, language, styles, attitudes and examples of Logos, Pathos and Ethos. Perhaps I could use this newfound knowledge to persuade my future employer to improve working conditions for example, or perhaps when convincing colleagues to vote or petition for a change in the workplace. Thank you, Dr. Bryant, for putting in the level of effort that you did. I appreciate it very much.

Analyzing rhetoric, quite frankly, is something that I am rather glad I received the opportunity to learn via College-Ready Writing Essentials. It was not something I went over in high school, and I think that my ability to analyze arguments suffered because of that fact. Understanding the differences in ethos, pathos, and logos contributes to my own skills as a writer and a debater, due to the fact that comprehending why arguments work the way they do is instrumental to those abilities.

    Maximiliano L.
    Student

Before taking this class, I had already done a good amount of work with rhetorical analysis in my AP English Language and AP English Literature and Composition classes in junior and senior year of high school respectively…but I remember being afraid I’d never really understand rhetorical analysis. I feel College-Ready Writing Essentials has benefited me greatly, as I can now confidently define, describe, and use examples of some key concepts like Ethos, Logos and Pathos when speaking to other people (something that was certainly missing from my prior experiences!).

    August V.

I thought College-Ready Writing Essentials was extremely thorough. It covered everything a student heading off to college would need to know about writing. I love the fact that we have lifetime access…If you have a student heading off to college, or if they just want to become a better writer, I highly recommend this online writing course! I promise your student will not regret it.

    Monique Gilkison

Having taught HS English and then a college freshman writing class, I saw the vast difference (and lack) of writing abilities from students coming from several different states. I would say 1 out of 30 had skills that only needed honing. I would highly recommend parents and schools getting on board with College-Ready Writing Essentials—college is an investment and this is a great way to protect the investment you are about to make.

    Christine Mitcheltree

College-Ready Writing Essentials goes beyond the mechanics to help students understand such things as the expectations for college-level writing, the importance of critical thinking, how to express their own ideas based on information and research, how to present arguments, the importance of taking into consideration what a course instructor will be looking for, and how to work with peers…College-Ready Writing Essentials offers [high schoolers and homeschoolers] who are unable to participate in a college-prep level writing class, the opportunity to receive excellent instruction…I highly recommend.

I was low-key ready to give you a co-teaching credit for as much as I leaned into your work [College-Ready Writing Essentials—PDF Edition]. Five Stars. Extremely satisfied.

Prior to taking this course I did not have the best writing skills. I was very incompetent when it came to grammar or rhetorical devices. The number one thing that College-Ready Writing Essentials has taught me is there are multiple writing styles. This allowed me to realize if I laid out the issue, gave background, and stated my perspective with evidence, then I could also persuade my audience. I do not have to copy someone else’s style or paper because my writing is good enough.

The second most important thing College-Ready Writing Essentials taught me is that writing takes time; there are so many steps that go into creating a successful paper. Prior to taking this course, my research assignments would take me maximum a week. After taking this course, I realize that all those papers were still in the development stages. In my eyes, the final essay I wrote for College-Ready Writing Essentials has been the only paper that has evolved into being a completed piece. The college readiness writing helped me understand how to develop my essays for the future. No essay is complete after the first draft; sometimes it even takes two or three revisions.

I wish I had known all this BEFORE I started—my first college semester probably would have gone a lot better! Key Concept #4 alone in Dr. Bryant’s guide to college culture is worth investing in his [College Success Accelerator] program! His deep background and experience with the transition space between high school and college allow him to provide unique insights to help instructors, parents, and of course the students themselves. Our family had never thought much before about how college might be so different from high school—but it is!

College-Ready Writing Essentials provided me with multiple new challenges I hadn’t seen in previous English courses, but I was able to use each of these challenges to further my abilities in the subject. I believe that the most important things I learned from this course are as follows: First, I learned what makes an argument effective. This allows me to make my own arguments much more substantial. Second, I learned that an argumentative essay doesn’t necessarily need to follow a certain layout. Third, I learned how to convey my thoughts to my peers in a professional, respectful manner. The multiple peer reviews helped me to accomplish this. I believe that these lessons will be my biggest take-aways from this year, and they are what I will most likely be using the most in the future. I would like to thank you for all your help.

College-Ready Writing Essentials has helped me envision how exactly I will communicate and persuade my audience in the future, whether it be in classes or at a company. The quality of writing I produced using College-Ready Writing Essentials exceeded my own expectations. I was also able to provide a helpful hand to my classmates in editing and giving advice toward a better formed piece of writing.”

Analyzing rhetoric, quite frankly, is something that I am rather glad I received the opportunity to learn via College-Ready Writing Essentials. It was not something I went over in high school, and I think that my ability to analyze arguments suffered because of that fact.

The sample essays in College-Ready Writing Essentials were genuinely useful. Looking at actual examples gave me a much better idea of how to structure the arguments, which really helped me make the paper better.

College-Ready Writing Essentials is an extremely useful tool for people learning to write in a collegiate style, and I’ve gone on to recommend the program to several of my fellow students also struggling with their writing skills.

On a personal note, this course has been vital to my own abilities as a writer. Analysis of good rhetoric has helped me so much in developing a better overall tone and style, and I have to directly thank Dr. Bryant’s analysis of excellent rhetorical examples for this turnaround.

I’ve received explicit feedback that I’ve grown as a writer, and I believe this is due to the stringency with which Dr. Bryant called upon us to examine examples of good rhetoric

I’m typically a fairly reserved person, but the material [in College-Ready Writing Essentials] was just begging for me to express my opinions or views on it. This was the best I have ever done in any English related course. Also, the most I have wanted to interact with the subject.

Bryant!

College-Ready Writing Essentials was an excellent resource as the lessons were extremely detailed and provided many examples to work off. I appreciated Dr. Bryant’s step-by-step support during every part of the process, and feel a LOT more confident in my writing capabilities as a result now!

College-Ready Writing Essentials helped a lot. Without College-Ready Writing Essentials it would take longer, and I wouldn’t have been able to write thoroughly. In particular, it was beneficial to explain through examples. I spent about an hour and a half a day reading College-Ready Writing Essentials lessons daily, looking at examples, and doing assignments. I felt proud to see essay completion gradually, even though it was difficult because it was a considerable amount of understanding and doing tasks.

College-Ready Writing Essentials focuses on substance and understanding, not just a final writing product. This is the kind of college preparation students need most. In college, students learn to develop a broader perspective and see the bigger picture. I think College-Ready Writing Essentials is a great stepping stone to that.

College-Ready Writing Essentials has given me the tools, from the initial brainstorming phase, to the actual writing stage, that I needed as an academic writer. It was like a teacher taking you by the hand, through each step of the writing process, and allowing your writing potential to unfold. My feedback-peers have noticed an improvement in my writing. I’ve become more calm when approaching my writing process, and more clear with regards to choosing my topics. I highly recommend taking Dr. Bryant’s program. It will boost your self-confidence.”
